Big footwear brands team up for new line

From:http://www.buy-shoes-china.com/
Tag:Group division of Jones Apparel Group Inc,New Balance stores, handbags,Jones Apparel

Group division of Jones Apparel Group Inc. and popular athletic company New Balance announced Monday that they will partner to create a new footwear collection.
The fashion-lifestyle collection is set to debut in spring 2009 and will cash in on the trend toward casual and activewear affecting much of the nation.
Crain’s reported news last April of a probable shoe chain launch from clothing and accessories firm Jones Apparel.
Creative teams from both Nine West and New Balance will collaborate on the new line’s design, and branding materials will feature both companies. Boston-based New Balance will handle the shoe’s insole technology and production materials, while Nine West will be responsible for colors and styling. The line will be sold at a select group of Nine West and New Balance stores.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“Combining New Balance’s leading performance technology including forward-thinking materials design, with Nine West’s fashion expertise is a win-win opportunity for both companies,” Rob DeMartini, chief executive of New Balance, said in a statement.
Retail experts agree that focusing on items like shoes and handbags during an economic downturn is smart, as consumers shift from apparel to accessories, which are less expensive but still provide outfits with a fashion facelift. The partnership is expected to benefit both companies.
“I don’t think anyone would say that New Balance is fashion forward, but Nine West is,” said Michael Appel, a managing director at Quest Turnaround Advisors. He explained that the collaboration will help Nine West become more casual and expand its customer base. In addition, the new collection will help New Balance reach a more fashion-focused consumer by expanding beyond its traditional performance-footwear.
Unfortunately, the news did not help shares of $3.8 billion-Jones Apparel. The company’s stock shed nearly 4.5% to $14.29 in Monday trading, though the drop is in keeping with other retail stocks, including Ann Taylor Stores Corp., down more than 4%, and the Standard & Poor’s Retail Index, which fell 1.6% Monday.

New Michigan law makes gift certificates keep their value

From:http://www.chinalightindustry.com/
Tag:I think it's only fair,a gift certificate during a sale, gift certificates,a good chunk of money

Rachelle Powell felt she got shafted when she couldn't use a gift certificate at the former Speakeasy Restaurant after it announced it was closing in February.
The Mt. Morris Township woman says the experience left a sour taste in her mouth and she's glad retailers will no longer be able to get away with refusing gift certificates under a new law.
"I think it's only fair," Powell said.
Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has signed into law legislation that strengthens consumer protections on gift cards and gift certificates.
One of the provisions prohibits retailers from refusing to accept a gift certificate during a sale, closeout or liquidation. The package of new laws also bans most "inactivity" service fees on gift certificates.
Rachelle and her husband, Keith, received a $100 gift certificate to Speakeasy in Flushing Township for Christmas from their daughter.
Two months later, they learned the restaurant was going out of business and showed up to use their gift certificate.
"They knew there was a problem when they were selling those gift certificates and were getting cash and we didn't get anything except a piece of paper," she said.
"That was a good chunk of money from (our daughter). We felt we had an obligation to go use that so we could tell her we enjoyed that. Who would have dreamed that we would have to race to use it that quickly."
Speakeasy Owner John Bonardelli previously stated that he announced his plans to close a few days early, partly because he wanted people to be able to use their gift certificates. He could not be reached for comment Monday.

Textile exporters and industrialists go on strike today

From:http://www.appareltextile-china.com/
Tag:Industrialists and textile exporters, material,of export goods, the chain of production

Industrialists and textile exporters have announced an indefinite strike and closure of their units, rendering thousands of workers and staff jobless. The action was taken as the government failed to announce an expected Textile Relief Package here Thursday, after an inter-ministerial special committee meeting in Islamabad.
Sources from the Ministry of Commerce told members of the Action Committee of Industrialists and Exporters that the Prime Minister upon his return from Dubai may announce the relief package on July 15th. Industrialists are protesting against a 31 percent increase in gas tariffs as well as manifold increases in electricity and petroleum prices.
Announcing the unanimous decision of the industrialists, Khuwaja Asem Khurshid, Chairman of Joint Action Committee of Industrialists and Textile Exporters said the government had failed to fulfil its promise to the business community. He added "We are constrained to go on strike from July 11 to July 15, 2008 as a first phase." He added that if the government failed to announce a relief package by then that they would have no alternative but to strike indefinitely.
Khurshid, who is also the president of Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI), disclosed that ten leaders from various chambers of commerce and industry would reach Faisalabad tomorrow to join the protests of the Faisalabad business community.
Muhammad Javed Aslam, Chairman, Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association (PHMA) North Zone said that that Pakistani textile products were already under great pressure in the international market. He added that our exporters were unable to obtain export orders, and Pakistan was not in a position to compete with India, China, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
He added that the government had already increased petroleum prices manifold earlier and now with the 31 percent increase in gas tariff, a chain reaction of price hikes on various items had started. Additionally, the material used in the manufacturing of export goods was becoming costlier.
0"As a result, we are finding it almost impossible to keep the prices of our knitwear export goods equivalent or less than our competitors in the international market," Aslam said. He announced that all hosiery units in Pakistan would be closed from July 11 to July 15 in first phase through out the country.
He added that the textile sector was backbone of the country's economy and was earned 60 percent of the nation's foreign exchange in addition to providing employment to 38 percent of the people. The PHMA chief said with continued high production costs, the industry would collapse totally and the national economy, which was already over-burdened with inflation, would be in a difficult position.
Most of the speakers at the meeting said that R&D was not a subsidy, but rather a compensation of the duties and taxes paid by the exporters and industries in the chain of production.

Walking away from shoes

Tag:first pair of shoes,leather,socks,shoes
From:http://www.buy-shoes-china.com/

I was thinking recently about the day I put socks on "Snoopy."
"Snoopy" was my sister's cat growing up.
Why put gym socks on a cat? Same reason kids do anything -- it was there.
The cat limped across the floor, alternately shaking and licking its paws till it managed to get the offending articles off its body, all the while shooting me a look that was part confusion, part annoyance.
My son gave me that same look last week. I bought him his first pair of shoes.
"Come on, walk to mama, walk to mama."
He looked down and shook his feet. Then, he fell to the floor, took off a shoe and began to eat it. I put the shoes back on. He ripped them back off.
I put them on, this time tighter. He ripped them off, this time shoving the strip of Velcro down his throat.
"Aaacckkk." He made a gagging sound that, oddly enough, reminded me of my sister's cat, too.
"What's wrong with 'Sparkleworks?'," asked the big sister, calling her brother by the nickname she gave him after our bedtime reading of a literary masterpiece by the makers of "My Little Pony." (He is "Sparkleworks;" my daughter is "Rainbow Dash;" and I'm "Pinkie Pie," named after the pony with helium balloons tattooed on its butt.)
"Nothing's wrong. I'm just trying to get him to wear shoes."
I probably waited too long to wrap his little sausage feet in Velcro and leather. For the last 14 months, he's worn either socks, bootie things or nothing. Figuring it was about time, I bought him a pair of sneakers.
Then, I propped him up next to the coffee table and got out the video camera.
"Come on 'Sparkleworks'," said the big sister in a high saccharine voice, clapping her hands. The boy stared at his feet, likely wondering why his mother kept putting something so delicious so far from his mouth. He dropped to the floor and crawled off to eat his shoes in peace. He knows how to walk. He just chooses not to.
"Bah, he has his whole life to walk. Why be in a hurry?" I often say this to mommy friends when they tell tales of their newborns leaping from their arms and running down flights of stairs. But as my boy pushed past 14 months, I started feeling the pressure. Was I doing something wrong? Did he need help? Encouragement?
I spent one afternoon, propping him up like a stiff doll. He took a couple steps. And, I made a video that would make anyone prone to motion sickness throw up on the spot.
That seemed to satisfy us both. He went back to crawling. And, I went back to not being in a hurry. He'll walk some day. He might even wear shoes.
Whether he'll get over the emotional scaring of having a sister who calls him 'Sparkleworks,' that's left to be determined.
